journaling

Place a higher emphasis recently on journaling .

It has benefits:
  • It relieves stress
  • It helps with problem solving
  • It helps with creativity
What should we write about?
  • Thank
  • Learn
  • Connect
This is known as "TLC". (Thanking, Learning, Connecting) are important. The more you do them, the better you’ll become — at whatever it is you’re doing.

a robot namd shimon

Shimon has been in development for some years. Recently it has written its own music. Shimon was able to use deep learning techniques to create two 30 second pieces of original music.

Shimon was given a vast amount of musical data: more than 5,000 complete songs, two million motifs, riffs and short passages of music by researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

As well as the deep learning, Shimon also uses computer vision through a camera on its robot-head to detect what notes it should be playing. It uses what it learned (which can include melodic, harmonic and rhythmic patterns) to generate its own personal music based on a musical seed.

Here's the link that includes a video of Shimon playing music: from Wired

complaining is not good for you

Research shows that we complain every sixty seconds in a conversation. Complaining feels good. That's why we do it so much. It's getting something off our shoulders.

Complaining is repeat behavior.

Complaining sets our neurons free so we may do and pay attention to other things. The flow of information moves easier. Repeated complaining rewires our brains. That way the neurons come closer together so they "fire" better. The connections between the neurons become more permanent.

When we complain that makes future complaining more likely.

By this process, complaining becomes our default behavior. People will perceive us differently. Can you see why complaining is damaging to the brain? Complaining is also stressful. It raises blood sugar and blood pressure.

There's more. There is an increase in heart disease and the possibility of stroke. Be cautious about who we "hang" with.

How to combat the health implications.

Be grateful. Daily. This reduces stress. Also, engage in solutions. Identify the purpose and go forward to reach a solution. Turn problems into solutions.

"One can no more prevent the mind from returning to an idea than the sea from returning to a shore. In the case of the sailor this is called the tide; in the case of the guilty it is called remorse. God upheaves the soul as well as the ocean."

baldwin on writing

"Something that irritates you and won’t let you go. That’s the anguish of it. Do this book, or die. You have to go through that. Talent is insignificant. I know a lot of talented ruins. Beyond talent lie all the usual words: discipline, love, luck, but most of all, endurance."

Much of that self-revelation, Baldwin points out, happens not during the first outpour of writing but during the grueling process of rewriting.
